It’s been a huge year with Facebook, constant updates and questions that keep rolling in!
Let’s start the year off with the questions that I get asked about Facebook. I don’t actually have a 101 primer, however, there are many that keep popping up in my communities and social networks!
Before we start let’s recap the changes that occurred this year inside of Facebook.
- Massive algorithm update occurred on the 11th January 2018, this affected all business pages, reducing our organic reach to 1% or less.
- Facebook closed and then re-opened messenger bots.
- Carousel ads for stories were added. (You now see ads popping up in your stories.)
- New info and Ads section were added to our pages, letting everyone see your ads and vice versa.
- They updated Facebook group information (social learning and units).
- Facebook announced a membership subscription was being rolled out.
I am sure there were more updates, however, these were the ones that I was able to keep track of in 2018.
My predictions for 2019 and Facebook
Video for Facebook
I think we’re going to see a lot more video. If you don’t have a video on your strategy for 2019, now is the time to reconsider and plan!
Facebook live video (in my opinion and insights) still is getting huge organic reach!
Content for Facebook
I also think the audience on Facebook wants to be educated and see real authentic content. So the more authentic you can be the better!
I think there will also be a huge increase in groups. As business owners realise their pages are not working as well as they hoped, groups are a way for them to build their own community!
Now for the frequently asked questions!
(These are directly from my community and social media networks.)
Should I have a personal profile or Business Page?
You should have a personal profile and then create business a page(s) for each business.
However, the issue I see is that many people create 2 personal profiles to try and remove anyone from seeing their profile from their business page. Firstly, that goes against Facebook terms and conditions. You may find yourself one morning not being able to access any of your accounts as you have been put in Facebook Jail.
Secondly, no one on your business page can see what is in your personal profile or newsfeed unless you post to your personal profile as a public post.
Thirdly, you can not use your personal profile to promote or sell to your friends. I hope this helps if you are stuck here!
Can I have multiple personal profiles?
Yes, you can, however, it breaches the terms and conditions of Facebook!
Can I have a business page and have no one see my personal profile?
Absolutely, make sure that you have your personal account security settings set to represent what you need. Only make posts to your personal profile for your friends and not set to public. However, just a little coaching here!
People will Facebook stalk you prior to connecting with you or your business. It is good to offer a few public posts which will showcase your authentic self and what you are interested in. (Of course, keep this professional.) Don’t share the Friday night out with the girls pics!
How do I know that my settings are set correctly?
From the blue arrow on the right-hand side of your profile:
Click on Settings >> Privacy – Go through the settings and make sure you are happy with them.
Why are people not engaging with my posts?
One word Algorithm. People are not seeing them or they are not interested in what you are posting. The Algorithm can be worked with by using Facebook Live, sharing your posts to groups that allow networking or conducting ad campaigns for your posts if you have the budget for ads.
Increase your organic reach by using Facebook Live as a strategy. There are a number of things you can chat about, however, make sure you have a strategy around these events. Also see stories question below!
What should I be postings on Facebook and how often?
Great Question! Again things have changed and the algorithm states that we need to have engagement on our posts otherwise we will be penalised. I think the best practice is to post at different times and then check your insights to see where you are getting the most engagement.
I don’t like live video, so how else can I use video?
You can pre-record your videos now and release them as a Facebook Premier. It is a live video that has been pre-recorded. Seems to get a similar organic reach to that of a Real Facebook Live
I don’t understand stories and why should I be posting in them?
Stories have their own little algorithm. When posting to stories on a daily basis I get a higher reach organically. I can get anywhere up to 20/40 people view my story on my business page and that is about 1% of my fans. Fans can engage with that story and they often do i.e. tick for engagement completed.
Stories are a snapshot of what is happening in your business or for you. I would coach you not to post the same content as you are posting on your page. Make stories more exciting and interesting, they only last for 24 hours! Check out the stories tab, it’s the blue plus symbol on your profile picture on your business page. (You also have one on your personal profile.) There are a number of really cool effects you can add to your picture!
What are messenger bots?
Messenger bots are an Artificial Intelligence with real-time human connections. They can answer real-time questions and give answers. Use them as a shopping catalogue or just book clients in for the service. They are great as they can be customised to suit your business needs. In the world of demand and instant communication, it takes away the human element of always answering questions at all hours of the day and night!
What is a group and why do I need one?
Groups are similar to your business page. However, they have a few more functions i.e. social learning allows you to organise your content into a membership or training site. You can have a public, closed or secret group, depending on your strategy and it is a great way to have discussions and interaction with your fans!
What are the correct settings to get my business page to work?
Make sure that you take the time to fill out all sections of your business page. These details can be found next to the share button, click on the 3 dots and you will see the tabs… general – contact – hours – more.
Work through these tabs to ensure you have all the details about your business. Also add the story about your business, as this will be visible to your fans on the right-hand side when they go to your page.
Use the button to encourage engagement. This can send them to your group, to your website or just to contact you!
Make sure your profile picture and timeline image are complementary to the services that you offer
How do I get my friends over to my business page?
There is an invite button on the right-hand side of your business page, you can invite your friends to your page.
I did a Facebook ad and forgot to cancel it, this cost me a fortune! What do I need to fill in here?
I hear this more often then I would like to. Make sure when you’re starting out with ads you always have a start and END date. This will negate the problem of forgetting you placed an add.
I am sure you have additional questions and I haven’t covered them. Please leave them in the comments section, I am more than happy to update this article and cover what you need.
In conclusion, though, Facebook is a great platform for your business, make sure you have a strategy that you can monitor and adapt to. Creating a small budget to start with and ensuring you have a clear target market will improve your results.
Connect with networking groups and offer value, implement your Facebook live strategy and be consistent with all you do online!
There is no magic bullet, even though some may tell you so. The key to any success online in the world of social media is being consistent, checking your results, change what isn’t working, master it and rinse and repeat.
Keep up to date with the changes and implement the changes.
I hope you enjoyed this article and look forward to sharing more about Facebook and the updates next month!
