When people trust you, they are more likely to buy from you.
But building trust doesn’t happen by chance, overnight or with a false strategy.
You have to convince people with the “whole package” …

You have to become a trustworthy leader and have to lead with trust.
You should remain consistent in your messaging, understand your target audience and deliver on your promises over time.
Only then are you able to become the go-to provider in your niche.
We can say:
Trust is a by-product of a commitment to quality and excellence.
If you are able to deliver the right results to the right people for a long time, they will believe and trust in your products and the services you offer.
Therefore be vigilant about your behaviour and communication. Back up, who you say you are, with authentic and tangible actions.
WE HAVE LEARNED NOW …
Trust is earned on many levels (personality, leadership, brand).
There is no clear-cut process to trust.
Let us be honest:
It is not really easy to build trust in your personality, leadership, and brand. It takes time and specific strategies.
And we should never believe, that trust is always something “durable”. Trust can be quickly destroyed.
David DeSteno, professor of psychology at Northeastern University and the author of “The Truth About Trust” said so wisely, “Trust is an evolving thing, that ebbs and flows”.
But, trust is a decision-making process, that can be understood and influenced.
When we know, how we can influence trust, we can become successful.
Through my experiences with the topic trust in the last years, I learned, why so many people have no real success.
Here are 10 secrets I’ve learned to why so many entrepreneurs are not successful:
1. They don’t trust themselves
Before you can build trust, you should boost your self-trust.
For this, you need confidence, self-acceptance, and self-esteem.
These three factors lead to self-trust and you can reach your destination in record time.
When you don’t have enough self-trust, you will struggle to have success.
Self-trust is a necessary condition for building trust.
Ask yourself now:
- Do I trust myself?
- Am I motivated enough?
- Do I hesitate too often in decisive moments?
- Do I fear something?
2. They’ve had bad experiences with trust
First, identify bad experiences, that can sabotage your success.
We human beings have a problem with overcoming bad experiences. We always think in problems and cannot forget obstacles and setbacks. When we have had a bad experience with trust, we retire into our shell.
Planning ahead can help you stay on the winning track.

We too often sabotage ourselves, because we cannot overcome old problems and difficulties.

3. They are not planning trust
When you want to be successful, it is essential, that you plan daily to do something for trust.
I like to get into deeper contact with interesting contacts, from time to time. Do some calls with promising people, engage regularly in the networks, and present me and my business in the best way.
I schedule my day.
Because if I don’t, success doesn’t happen.
Only when we identify essential tasks and schedule them, can we effectively get things done. Then we really know, that it’s done and out of the way.

Break your plans down into small goals. Do something daily. Write a journal about your daily success.
4. They are making excuses
We too often decide against trust.
There is a good reason we shouldn’t do something. We live in our own world, limit ourselves and don’t want to take the first step. We don’t feel good enough about ourselves, have prejudices against the client, or simply hesitate.
Our behaviour is often rooted in fear or other self-limiting beliefs.
When I ask people:
- “What is holding you back?”
- “Why don’t you give people your trust?”
Often, the response is:
- “I don’t like the person“
- “The person is not trustworthy.”
Trustworthy or not trustworthy … how derogatory is that!
Worthy or not worthy?
When we see it from that perspective, we don’t give people a chance.
We are intolerant.
We should learn this:

5. People should earn their trust
For a long time there has been a given rule in business:
We should earn people’s trust.
Thus, people have had to prove themselves, show their expertise, and prove their competency.
WE SHOULD LEARN NOW …
Earning trust is old-school thinking. Why must we prove ourselves?
We should not degrade ourselves. Earning people’s trust can lead to problems.
Focusing on trustworthiness makes us to trust hunters, profit seekers and can lead to falseness and hypocrisy. We try to win the contact, instead of seeing the human being who needs our trust.
When you connect with other people, give them your trust.
Simply make the first step. Don’t wait.

6. They are “wholeheartedly” selective
There are many entrepreneurs, who want to sell something and promote their business, but are “wholeheartedly” selective.
They make decisive differences between people react “choosy” and inconsistent.
They have no clear principles, a biased attitude and assume to know everything about other people.
And often such people make others believe, that they are open-minded and have a heart for other people.
How can such an attitude be convincing?
Talking about trust and being selective, does not make us trustworthy.
7. They are not accessible
Being not accessible for people and totally “blocking” other people, that want to contact us, is certainly not the best strategy.
Okay, what is certainly clear:
“Authorities”, when extremely successful, have to say goodbye to too much closeness, openness, and straightforwardness. Acting a bit more secretively and uninterested.
However, completely “hiding” ourselves behind our success and “fame” does not make us a trustworthy leader.
We may certainly limit our time and personal efforts for others with our increasing success (very well knowing, that our resources are limited). But giving up any contact to the outer world, to fans and followers, and people who may have an interest in us is certainly the “dumbest” approach.
Good branding means, demonstrating consistently, that we are open, interested and a bit supportive.
And we really must not react to every need people have!
We should never let ourselves be stressed by other people’s wishes and worries.
Learn to keep the door open, even when you are successful, but always know your principles and boundaries!
8. They are not honest
I realize, that many entrepreneurs are not talking honestly to people.
They avoid any direct confrontation and “beat around the bush”.
Trying to avoid explanations in detail, in order to prevent trouble and difficulties, is a bad approach.
How can trust develop, when we hide behind anonymity and dishonesty?
Communication is very crucial for the trust-building process.
Only an open, honest and regular communication builds trust.
9. They are not making real connections
It’s very important to really create a personal connection with people and not a superficial relationship.
Getting to know people, having a real interest in their ideas, interests, opinion, and worries, makes them believe we are one of them. This deepens the connection and creates closeness.
Emphasize, what you have in common, find common ground, and people will like you. Find similarities – if the other person believes you are “like” them, they will certainly trust you more.
10. They make “empty” promises
As we are now living our business life to a great extent online, we too often fall into the trap to promise people something thoughtlessly. Only for satisfying their needs or wishes, to calm the person, or dealing with difficulties.
Flippantly, we promise things, that on the other hand, we don’t want to fulfill, or don’t have the time to fulfill.
We are not aware that through our behaviour we jerk people around, and annoy them.
When we want to be seen as a trustworthy person, we should always “walk the talk”, and fulfill our promises.
Trust is too important a matter to be squandered.
Excellent leaders act with integrity and keep commitments.
In case you cannot keep a commitment, explain, what is happening without delay.
And for being successful it is also good to know how people build trust.
