In the last few years, and especially since the recent emergence of ChatGPT, numerous AI platforms have hit the market. Although previous SaaS products weren’t as sophisticated, these new AI-generated platforms rely on machine learning and predictive analysis for various tasks. Companies are using them to simplify their marketing processes, including competitive analysis, search and social media optimization, budgeting, and much more. It was only a matter of time until the need arised to have a tool to detect whether AI was used to create content, and thus the AI content detector tool was born.

One of the ways in which businesses have been increasingly using AI tools is to generate content for their marketing campaigns. Generative AI programs can produce a variety of textual and even visual content. Something that previously took content marketers hours and hours to finish, an AI writing platform can do in mere minutes and make it appear like it was human-written content.

That being said, not everyone is receptive to this new technology, as AI-written content carries several risks, including low readability and unnatural language. This is why companies are increasingly using AI detection tools as content checkers to ensure none of the content on their sites, regardless if it is sourced internally or externally, is made by automatic AI content generators and is thus truly human content.

What is an AI Content Detector Tool?

Let’s first define what exactly an AI detection tool.

As the name implies, an artificial intelligence detection tool can help determine if a post was made by AI software or a human writer. These platforms rely on a combination of natural language processing and sophisticated algorithms based on machine learning, and often will return an AI percentage score as a result. The higher the score, the more likely the text was made by generative AI tools.

Today, the majority of software creators rely on ChatGPT technology for their AI-generated text tools. ChatGPT’s advanced language generation model can help create almost all forms of content, most of which are hard to differentiate from the human-written text. That is why even OpenAI, the developers of ChatGPT, are developing tools to detect AI-generated text as well.

Why Are AI Content Detector Tools Important in Marketing?

As mentioned, the use of these Generative AI tools can cause several major issues for your business:

  • If you are investing a lot of budget with external agencies for content creation, you want to be certain these articles were indeed written by humans. In that sense, an AI content detection tool performs a similar task as CopyScape and other plagiarism detectors, ensuring all content pieces on your site are of the highest possible quality.
  • AI detectors can even work in the case of false positives. Given that these programs track robotic texts, they can help you establish if an article suffers from poor readability. This can help writers improve their pieces, thus increasing user engagement.
  • According to John Mueller, Google’s Senior Search Analyst, the company’s search engine algorithms often perceive machine-generated text as spam. So, overusing artificial intelligence tools can even lead to Google penalties, hurting your site’s SEO.

While using content generators is a tempting proposal, it’s not always the best choice. At this point in time, using 100% AI-written content carries too many risks to be considered a good solution. Despite its low price, it’s much safer to go with tried and tested methodology and rely on your writers to deliver results.

While there are many scenarios, such as content ideation, for which AI is an excellent tool for writers, companies have the right to know and decide whether they want to utilize AI-written content. The AI detection tool thus becomes a critical part of quality assurance for marketing operations.

The 15 Best AI Detection Tools I Recommend

Similar to AI text generators, the detector tool market is still in its inception. Different tools have different accuracy rates, with some of them being much more restrictive than others. Still, based on my personal experience, these are some of the platforms that can yield the best results for your business. I highly recommend you compare the results on your own and understand that these platforms are all quickly trying to adapt, and thus I am finding that modifications to how these tools run are quite frequent.

Many of these AI detection tools also feature additional functionality, so be sure to read each product description for the details!

1. Originality.ai

Originality AI

Originality AI is one of the best platforms on the internet for detecting AI-written text. The software detects GPT-3, GPT-4, and Chat GPT, with an amazing 98% GPT-4 detection accuracy rate. In other words, if a tool detects AI, you can be almost certain that your writers used a generator during the content creation process.

Aside from serving as an artificial intelligence checker, Originality AI also helps acts as a traditional plagiarism checker. This feature is fantastic for ensuring there isn’t any duplicate content on your site. If we also consider its readability scoring, you can always be sure your articles are original, well-written, and can achieve high engagement.

2. GPTZero

GPTZero

An interesting thing about GPTZero is that it gives you insights into how different natural language processing techniques work. You can use this free software for content generation based on GPT4, GPT3, Bard, and Chat GPT language model. That way, it’s easier to understand how your articles should look like and what kind of expressions to avoid.

Of course, the main reason people use GPTZero is to detect AI-assisted content. You can copy-paste texts or import them directly from your computer. Unfortunately, like most free tools, GPTZero comes with a major restriction as it has a 5,000-character limit. Furthermore, we don’t know much about its accuracy rate and whether it can do a good job.

3. Content at Scale

Content at Scale

Content at Scale is a platform that has a wide range of features. Most notably, it’s marketed as an AI writing tool that freelance writers and marketing teams can use to simplify their daily tasks. Aside from generating texts, you can use it to create outlines and optimize for target keywords.

One of its key features is URL rewriter. The software can spin competitors’ posts and create articles with similar structures and keywords that can help you rank in Google. You can also use the platform for AI and plagiarism checks and converting YouTube videos and podcasts into blog posts.

4. Copyleaks

Copyleaks

Like any other content detector tool on this list, Copyleaks can analyze various types of content. In terms of accuracy score, the tool provides a whopping 99.1% rate. But the most impressive feature is its risk governance, which can detect copyright infringement for any piece of writing.

You can try the basic functionality at any time, for free, and there’s also a Chrome extension that can simplify your daily tasks. The paid version supports 12 languages and is significantly faster than its free counterpart. The paid version also removes the detection limit per document.

5. Writer AI Content Detector

Writer AI Content Detector

If you have a large marketing brand, you should definitely consider adding the Writer platform to your toolbox. In this particular case, I’ll focus on the features that can help your marketing content.

Writer’s AI content detector is a small, free tool that you can use with certain limitations. It allows you to check up to 1,500 characters of potentially fake content. The software has limited functionality, and it’s hard to tell whether its scores are accurate enough. Based on what I’ve seen, it’s not as strict as some other platforms.

6. OpenAI’s Text Classifier

OpenAI’s Text Classifier

OpenAI’s Text Classifier is a solid tool for detecting AI-generated content. However, as the company representatives state, it still requires some work. Text Classifier has 26% true positives, meaning that it reaches 100% certainty in only 26% of cases. Unfortunately, it also categorizes human writing as AI- text in 9% of cases.

The platform works much better for longer articles above 1,000 characters. Still, that doesn’t mean that the checker will always provide solid results for long posts. While the software can be used for other languages, the results are subpar compared to its English checker.

7. GLTR

GLTR

GLTR stands for Giant Language model Test Room and is one of the older AI online checkers. The platform was made in 2019 by a team of Harvard NLP and MIT-IBM Watson AI lab experts. Unfortunately, its detection model is somewhat outdated, as it only works for GPT-2.

Although it doesn’t offer much in terms of functionality, especially when compared to some newer software, GLTR is completely free to use. The GPT-2 output detector allows marketers and content creators to check their pieces against a variety of sources.

8. Crossplag

Crossplag

The thing that separates Crossplag is its translation plagiarism detection feature. The platform supports more than 100 languages, helping you determine if a piece was directly translated from foreign sources. Of course, the detection software also works for English, providing a precise score for your online content.

Besides helping with AI-generated content, Crossplag also protects your intellectual property. This fantastic platform safeguards all your sensitive documents and other content by ensuring no one has republished them online.

9. Hugging Face

Hugging Face

Hugging Face is a large machine learning platform most commonly used by IT experts. However, it also has a few nifty tools geared toward marketers.

Its AI checker provides solid results for texts of any length. After copy-pasting your article in the box, the online program automatically generates results at the bottom. It can predict with high certainty if a piece is real or fake.

10. ZeroGPT

ZeroGPT

ZeroGPT is another simple, free-to-use platform that works for short and long articles. The program is web-based, so all you need to do is copy your text into the field. After a few seconds, the algorithm will mark all sentences and paragraphs that are likely AI-generated.

ZeroGPT utilizes a proprietary technology called DeepAnalyse that has 98% accuracy. Like other checkers, it supports various languages but works best for English. Based on what I’ve seen after using it for a while, ZeroGPT doesn’t impose any limitations.

11. Sapling.AI

Sapling.AI

The thing you’ll quickly notice with Sapling.AI is that this checker is much more complex than some of its web counterparts. After analyzing a text, the tool will mark all the sections that are potentially AI-generated. Below that, there’s a further breakdown of suspicious sentences. That being said, Sapling.AI provides better insights than some other checkers.

It’s worth noting that this is a paid tool, and free users can check up to 2,000 characters of text. A nice thing about the platform is that it offers several integrations, and you can add it to Google Docs and MS Word.

12. Kazan SEO

Kazan SEO

The biggest issue I had with Kazan SEO is that you have to create an account to use it. This is a rare thing for free tools, whether we’re talking about AI checkers or other programs.

However, Kazan SEO makes it up with accurate scoring. The platform also allows you to import URLs in bulk, which is ideal for processing numerous articles at once. Unfortunately, the software has one glaring weakness as it can only process texts up to 400 words.

13. Winston AI

Winston AI

Winston AI is an excellent platform that allows you to simultaneously check articles for plagiarism and AI content. You can copy-paste text directly or import it in the form of a .docx, .png, .jpf, or .pdf file. The unique thing about Winston AI is that it can “read” text on images and process it.

The platform is fantastic for marketing teams that want to automate their content checking from a single dashboard. Furthermore, you can export the data in the form of reports, which makes collaboration much easier.

14. Hive’s AI Detection Tools

Hive's AI Detection Tools

Marketers can use this platform to detect AI-generated content within images and texts. When it comes to text, the checker allows you to analyze posts that are between 750 and 8,192 characters long. However, the software works best for texts that are longer than 1,500 characters.

Unlike some other platforms, Hive doesn’t necessarily show if a text was made by humans or AI. Instead, it gives the percentage chance that certain sections are made by AI. In other words, it’s harder to tell if a text was made by tools, but there’s much more segmentation.

15. AI Writing Check

AI Writing Check

AI Writing Check is a platform with limited usefulness. It can only process texts that are between 100 and 400 word-long. This is a major issue for marketers who usually need to check longer articles of 1,000 words and more. The only saving grace is that there aren’t any use limitations.

AI Writing Check has an accuracy rate between 80% and 90%. So, if you’re looking for something more reliable, you should check other tools on the list.

Conclusion

Given the sudden rise of AI generators, marketers should equip themselves with reliable AI content detector tools to ensure that the important content that content publishers publish is truly human-created and original content. In the end, this is the only way to avoid issues that automatically generated content brings. AI detectors are especially vital for agencies that work with numerous freelance content writers and have to analyze volumes of content all the time, but they can also be used by writers themselves to help improve their writing on any give piece of content with the proper training.

Most of the tools on this list are free or come with a free trial. However, if you wish to use an AI content detection checker on a permanent basis because of the popularity of AI-created content, I suggest that you subscribe to one of the more popular platforms.
